Just before leaving for their tour of the USA, the Matsiko World Orphan Choir was introduced to the Monrovia-based support group STOP-GBV (Sisters Thinking as One to Prevent Gender-Based Violence).
The group, started by teenage survivors of sexual attacks, provides educational and emotional support to women and girls in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital city.
The choir gave food and supplies to the group and promised to try and get them educational sponsors as they toured the USA.
Reel Stories Founder, Mark Lee Hegarty, was introduced to the group when working on the Let The Children Sing! docuseries, currently in post-production.
Their stories, strength, and resilience moved him to write “Song For The Sisters” for the choir to celebrate their strength, and gain more awareness to support the group.
The song was co-written by Liberian producer Sir Duke Fahnborde, who also writes and records music with Liberia’s President Weah.
The music video was filmed in the Matsiko Centre in the Paynesville district of Monrovia, where the choir rehearses 3 times a week, and children in the community receive free after-school education.
Thanks to the choir, 32 members of the STOP-GBV group are now going to school and college after receiving educational sponsors from audience members after their shows in the USA.
The artwork features Helrona, or “T-Girl” as she is known to the choir.
